Magnesium plays a vital role in plants: it’s a constituent of chlorophyll, activates enzymes for protein biosynthesis, and facilitates the transport of photosynthetic products to growing points. Excessive application of ammonium, calcium, and potassium fertilizers antagonistically affects magnesium uptake. Generally, clay and heavy soils contain more magnesium than light sandy soils. However, magnesium is easily leached from topsoil by rainfall or irrigation, becoming unavailable to plant roots. Soil pH also impacts magnesium absorption; acidic conditions reduce root uptake.
